Ronaldo nets winner but Benzema injured
Cristiano Ronaldo struck midway through the first half to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Málaga, while Atlético Madrid kept up the pressure at the top of La Liga thanks to a Diego Costa goal in a 1-0 victory over Espanyol.Ronaldo's clinical shot from the edge of the box, his 25th league goal of the season, was enough to see off Málaga, who battled hard but lacked cutting edge. The only downside for Real was an injury to Karim Benzema which could put his participation in next Sunday's el clásico in doubt.
Costa, continuing a rich vein of form that has seen him score 22 league goals, outpaced Espanyol's defence before beating Kiko Casilla in the 55th minute. It was a cagey game but Atlético generally carried more threat and now have 67 points, three fewer than Real. Barcelona, third on 63 points, face Osasuna on Sunday. Reuters
Bayern complete sweep
Bayern Munich completed half a century of Bundesliga games without defeat with a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Mario Mandzukic, the league's top scorer, headed them in front just before the break with Bastian Schweinsteiger getting what proved a crucial second soon after the interval. Stefan Kiessling nodded in a consolation in stoppage time to make the final score 2-1. With Borussia Dortmund losing earlier, Bayern now have a 23-point advantage at the top. PARivaldo calls it a day
The former Barcelona and Brazil playmaker Rivaldo has announced his retirement at the age of 41. The 1999 Fifa World Player of the Year, who most recently played for Campeonato Brasileiro Serie C side Mogi Mirim, confirmed the news on Instagram, writing: "With tears in my eyes I would like first to thank God, my family and all the supporters … Today I communicate to all my fans in the world, my history as a player came to the end." PADefoe strikes twice
Jermain Defoe scored twice in the first half of his debut as his new-look Toronto side beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1. On his first appearance in Major League Soccer since leaving Tottenham, the England striker impressed, giving Toronto the lead in the 17th minute, then adding a second seven minutes later. Clint Dempsey scored in the 68th minute for Seattle.AP
