Spain's Torres shines in 2-0 win against Bolivia

Image
Spain striker Fernando Torres made a strong case for a World Cup place when he capped an impressive performance with a well-taken penalty as the depleted holders strolled to a 2-0 win over Bolivia on Friday. In the world and European champions' penultimate warm-up game before they begin the defence of their title in Brazil next month, Torres made the most of his starting place up front and substitute Andres Iniesta was also on target as Spain ruthlessly dominated the defence-minded South Americans in Seville. Bolivia, who failed to qualify for the World Cup finals, managed to hold out until halftime before Javi Martinez was bundled over in the penalty area and Torres calmly slotted the spot kick past Romel Quinonez in the 51st minute. It was the 30-year-old Chelsea forward's 37th goal in 107 appearances for Spain after an indifferent season with his club and he will hope to have done enough to be included in coach Vicente del Bosque's final squad to be announced on

Sanchez inspires Chilean comeback win over Egypt

Image
Barcelona striker Alexis Sanchez set up all three goals as Chile fought back from 2-0 down to beat Egypt 3-2 on Friday in their penultimate World Cup warm-up match. The Chileans, who play Australia in their World Cup opener on June 13, fell behind to two early goals on the counter-attack. First, Mohamed Salah broke free down the left after 12 minutes and drilled a shot high into the Chilean net. Four minutes later, Khaled Kamar did the same down the right, beating the Chilean offside trap and chipping goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to double Egypt's lead. Then Sanchez took over. On 26 minutes, he surged down the right and fired in a low cross for Marcelo Diaz, who teed the ball up with his first touch before volleying home off the far post. On the hour mark, Sanchez drifted in from the right flank and lofted the ball over the visiting defence for Eduardo Vargas, whose right-foot shot brought Chile level. With 12 minutes to play, Sanchez split the Egyptian defence wit

Dzeko brace as Bosnia beat Ivory Coast in World Cup warmup

Image
Striker Edin Dzeko scored a double to lead Bosnia to a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in an international friendly in Missouri on Friday. Dzeko scored once each half to give Bosnia a 2-0 lead before Didier Drogba scored a late consolation goal for Ivory Coast, Africa's highest ranked national team. With both teams having qualified for next month's World Cup, Friday's match gave both sides a chance to limber up for the tournament with little pressure. Bosnia, who are heading to the World Cup for the first time, dominated the match but squandered a series of opportunities to score. Dzeko, Bosnia's all-time leading international scorer, gave the eastern Europeans the lead after just 17 minutes when he rifled a shot into the back of the net from just inside the box. Ivory Coast's goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo had saved a shot from Edin Visca but his block ricocheted straight to the feet of Dzeko, who made no mistake with his shot. Dzeko scored again in the 53rd m

England 3-0 Peru; Roy Hodgson pleased with Wayne Rooney’s England effort and fitness

Wayne Rooney's return to action after injury concerns left the England manager, Roy Hodgson, very happy. Photograph: Ben Queenborough/BPI/Rex Roy Hodgson said he has no concerns over the state of Wayne Rooney’s form or fitness and was pleased with his contribution in the 3-0 send-off victory over Peru, despite the Manchester United striker’s rather peripheral display. Rooney was playing for the first time since his club side’s Premier League victory over Norwich on 26 April and, having taken fitness coaches with him on a family holiday in Portugal, appeared ring-rusty in a No10 role behind Daniel Sturridge. The latter’s stunning goal opened the scoring and set England en route to a comfortable win in front of 83,578 supporters, even if there was little indication of any combination play between the strike-pair. Indeed England’s second-half goals were delivered b

NBA's Clippers defy gravity with team's record sale price

May 30 (Reuters) - Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's record $2 billion deal to buy the Los Angeles Clippers shows that star forward Blake Griffin and his monster slam dunks aren't the only things that defy gravity. When the National Basketball Association first hit Clippers owner Donald Sterling with a lifetime ban, investment bankers estimated the price of his team at around $1 billion. Instead, three groups, teaming with billionaires and celebrities, bid up the price to a record for a NBA team, double the initial estimate. The eye-popping sale price has likely boosted the stock of other teams around the NBA, said sports consultant Ed Desser, a former top NBA TV executive, and could have a ripple effect. "Sports franchises are one-of-a-kind trophy properties," Desser said. "Every owner saw what just happened." As evidence, Rich Tullo, an analyst at Albert Fried & Company LLC, points to Madison Square Garden Co, which owns the NBA's Ne

Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer dies aged 86

Malcolm Glazer bought Manchester United in 2005 and saw them win five Premier League titles. Photograph: Dj Peters/Action Images Malcolm Glazer, the head of the family that own Manchester United, died on Wednesday morning aged 86, in his hometown of Tampa. While Glazer drove the controversial process that took control of United for the family in 2005 by leveraging the club with a £500m-plus debt, his recent failing health had meant that two of his sons, Joel and Avram, took on the hands-on role of leading the club. His passing should have little if any effect on the overall structure of the club, with the family retaining a 90% share with the remaining 10% listed on the New York stock exchange. A statement from the 20-times champions last night said: “The thoughts of all at the club are with the family at this time.” Glazer’s death was announced by the Tampa Bay Bu

Chelsea in talks with Atlético Madrid for left-back Filipe Luís

Image
Chelsea have resumed talks with Atlético Madrid over the recruitment of the highly rated Brazilian left-back Filipe Luís, one of three potential signings by the Premier League club from the Spanish league winners. Luís was a key member of the Atlético defence, backed up by the Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois in goal, that shipped only 26 goals in 38 games to claim a first league title since 1996. The 28-year-old full-back moved to Vicente Calderón from Deportivo la Coruña four years ago and, while he suggested after Saturday’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid that he intended to honour the final three years of his contract, the London club are confident they can lure him to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are seeking a replacement for the departing Ashley Cole, whose eight-year stay will end when his contract expires at the end of next month, and had also considered the credentials of Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno and Southampton’s Luke Shaw. Yet,

The discovery was made when Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima ordered the Education Ministry to create detailed profiles on each missing girl. During that process, involving visits to parents, 4 girls were found safe at home. It was learnt that these girls could be among those students who escaped when Boko Haram transported them to the unknown location. Following the return the parents probably failed to notify the competent bodies because they were afraid the abductors would return for the girls. Having taken into consideration the latest data, Kubo concluded that the current number of missing girls i

Nigeria 2-2 Scotland; Scotland have to settle for a draw as Nigeria snatch late equaliser

Photograph: Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Images For Scotland these are unexpected times, even if they squandered a fifth victory in six at the death here. Gordon Strachan’s side performed well against a Nigeria team that will soon be flying out to the World Cup and provided further hope that the wilderness years are drawing to an end. For the Super Eagles, their fans danced jubilantly as Uche Nwofor swept in a late equaliser, but there is work to be done before Brazil. In fairness to Stephen Keshi, the Nigeria manager, this was an experimental evening during which their big hitters were either absent or watched the majority of the match from the dugout. It was a chance for the reserves to stake a claim for a golden ticket, yet few manage
