ECOWAS Seeks Help Against Recent Spread Of Ebola Virus
The Economic Community Of West African States has asked its
member states for help to stop the recent outbreak of the deadly Ebola
fever in Guinea Republic.
In a recent statement by ECOWAS spokesman, Mr. Sunny Ugoh revealed that they made the call at its 31st meeting held in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday.
The statement said that ECOWAS wants an end to the epidemic as it can cause a loss of life, spreads easily and a serious threat to regional security.
The statement not only asked for help from the member states but also from the international community especially the West African Health Organisation, to take relevant actions.
It also said that they are mobilising stakeholders and gathering resources to stop the epidemic.
Ebola is a severe and mostly fatal disease in human and non human primates ranging from monkeys to gorillas and has a kill rate of 34%.
It has appeared periodically since its initial recognition in 1976. g
