Black currants are one of very popular, summer season berries. Indeed, they are incredibly rich in several valuable health benefiting phyto-nutrients, and anti-oxidants that are vital for our health. Blackcurrant is a small shrub belonging to the family of Grossulariaceae , in the genus; Ribes. Its scientific name: Ribes nigrum . Currants are native to central and northern Europe and Siberia. In general, currants grow best in the regions where summers are humid but winters severe and chilling. During the season, Ribes nigrum bears pendulous chain of small berries. The Nigerain Federal Government has today explained that the H5N1 virus bird flu has been discovered in five other states and also in Lagos and Kano. The other five states include, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau. The government explained that over 140,000 birds were affected in different poultry farms. They said that it is not yet an epidemic but they are working hard to stop the spread of the disease. The government last week revealed about the discovery of Bird flu in the nation, in both Lagos and Kano states. Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina said: “We are not in a state of any epidemic. Seven states have so far reported cases of the bird flu – Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Delta and Rivers, Edo and Plateau States. Cameroon has closed its borders with Nigeria and suspended all flights to and from Nigeria over fear of possible spread of Ebola Virus. Cameroon, according to the NIS, has a border boundary of over 2, 000 kilometres in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and Cross Rivers states in the South-South sub-region of Nigeria. Speaking yesterday, August 17 on a special programme of the Hausa Service of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) monitored in Maiduguri, the spokesman of Cameroon Foreign Affairs, Chiroumma Boukkari said the decision to close the borders with Nigeria has become inevitable, because of the fears of the ebola that spreads like wild fire in the West African sub-region.
